Special Events Risk Management

Globalization has created new and unique opportunities for travel and business that did not exist a decade ago. From Dubai to Mumbai, multinational corporations are hosting meetings, events, and conferences for business travelers from around the globe. However, with newfound markets and opportunities come increased risk, hazard, and potential conflict from a variety of forces.

Hotels and venues around the world, sites that routinely host large meetings, conferences, and other events, have increasingly become attractive targets of opportunity for devastating terror attacks. Hundreds of lives have been lost and millions of dollars in damage has been inflicted on property, businesses, and economies as terrorists have targeted weddings, cultural events, sporting events, and other large gatherings.

Industry experts are quick to remind planners and organizers that event guests today are well aware of violence, catastrophe, and tragedy. Stories of violence and tragedy inflicted by acts of terrorism dominate the headlines and catastrophic events are beamed across the globe in near real-time.  This resource of CPS focuses on what conference organizers and planners should familiarize themselves with when planning and organizing large scale events in foreign countries. It will provide guidance on how to navigate local customs, laws, and governmental concerns which can present new challenges that may differ from what an event organizer or planner is accustomed to dealing with domestically in the United States. This resource also identifies proper security planning steps that may be taken from a risk management perspective for an overseas event that may greatly reduce the likelihood of unforeseen risk factors which can negatively impact or derail your event.

As stated by a professional who is familiar with these challenges, “Crises are most often the products of poor planning, lack of media coordination, and lack of foresight. It is the task of the risk manager to minimize the damage, maximize the aid to victims, and work to make sure that the business survives the media onslaught.”
